Marc Arcuri , who played for Austral FC in South west Sydney , died tragically in July 2014 after suffering heart complications during a football match. He was just 15 years old.
The Marc Arcuri Cup, a six a side football competition was founded in his honour later that year and raised enough funds to purchase defibrillators for 3 clubs. The second event in 2015, in partnership with Royal Lifesaving Australia, provided 21 defibrillators, one of which will now benefit Sylvania Heights FC.
In the event of a cardiac arrest, when using a defibrillator, survival rates jump to around 70% from around 5-10% using CPR alone.
The defibrillator was presented to the Club, along with a quick training session, at the club’s April Committee meeting.
Club President Trent Jordan stated, “The defibrillator is very easy to use and gives you step by step instruction on what to do in an emergency. “ We sincerely hope the situation will never arise where we need to use the device, but if it does, we are confident we can do our best to improve the outcome”.
