WPL. SSFA v Northern Tigers (Sun 1 May)

SSFA General Manager May 2, 2016 Representatives, Women's Premier League Comments Off on WPL. SSFA v Northern Tigers (Sun 1 May)

WPL First Grade. SSFA (3) vs Northern Tigers (3)

Goal Scorers: Rochelle, V and Toni

Not quite the result we were looking for but we will take the 1 point.

Great start to the game with Kelly taking a free kick, which found Rochelle who managed to put the ball in the back of the net.  We were up 1 – 0 after 2 minutes and were looking good. Not long after that, Kate made a great run down the left side and put in a good cross to find Nicole who had a shot but it hit the crossbar.

Northern Tigers didn’t give up and their persistence in attack unfortunately found a mix up between our back line and keeper and Northern Tigers took advantage to score and even up the game.  A lucky goal. The game was very even and the ball moved from one end of the field to the other with Northern Tigers just having a slight advantage on possession in the first half.  They took advantage of a free kick from at least 20m out and put it straight into the back of the net.  We went into half time down 2-1.

Half time talk was a positive one the girls realized they were still in this.  They came out fighting in the second half and 53 minutes in Max put through a great ball for V to finish.  2 – 2 and we were on the come back.  3 minutes later we had a corner, which found Toni who scored a great goal with a header.  Sutho up 3-2. The girls seem to like close games, not sure how much the coach, manager and bench can handle.  They tried hard to increase the lead and they defended their hearts out but unfortunately with 5 minutes to go Northern Tigers got a lucky goal to equalize.

Unlucky today girls, look forward to Central Coast next week, away.  And remember its Mothers Day, so the best present you can give your mum is a WIN.

Reserve Grade. SSFA 0 v Northern Tigers 2

Unfortunately the result does not reflect the well fought game in the middle of the park.

The game started with a frantic Northern Tigers who seemed to take over our half. The girls soon took possession and were patient with the ball as per Mark’s instructions. Both sides had some chances but the score at half time was still 0-0.

Due to injury, the team had to make two very important changes to the second half’s starting eleven. This was on top of another three players being absent from the team sheet because they too are recovering from injury! But the substitutes did very well and the passing game continued. A bit of a scramble at our goal mouth resulted in a goal. 0-1 to the Tigers. And a bit later, an unmarked player ran down the left wing to make it 0-2. Although the girls made several attempts to get close to the penalty box and were rewarded a couple of corners, we could not get the much desired goals.

We look forward to next week’s bye. The rest will do the niggling injuries a lot of good.

Our bench included U17 players. We thank them for their help. Melody Nelson gets a special mention for gallantly filling in as goalkeeper through the whole of the second half.

Thank you to our sponsors Gymea Tradies and Jubilee Physio, especially Emily.

More of the beautiful game next week and see you at the game

WPL17:  SSFA – 0  vs  Northern Tigers – 3

This was meant to be one of the matches of the season but unfortunately we started very slow & found ourselves down by 2 at halftime.

We all knew what to expect with the Tigers as a club being very strong generally across all grades. They are all very well drilled, good on the ball & have good structure so it was no surprise to find their 17’s come out & pressure us from the first whistle. Both goals we conceded in the first half were avoidable & were a direct result of turning over the ball cheaply.

The first came from us pushing into attack & when we kicked possession away they played forward straight away & found their Striker 1 on 1 with our Defender,

Once their Striker won the ball she was one on one with Emma in goals who tried valiantly diving to her right but the ball was well placed into the far left corner.

The second came from another cheap turnover of possession & the defensive pressure we put on to win the ball back resulted in a free kick. The free kick was taken high & with the wind assistance carried over our Keeper & just under the bar into the back of the net.

The team came out in the 2nd half & really took it to the Tigers & controlled the ball a lot better but it was evident it wasn’t to be our day. We were looking very dangerous on corners & when Zoe took a free kick in a similar position to the one the Tigers took the shot hit the cross bar. Everyone’s entitled to a bad day every now & then, we just seemed to have several have theirs on the one day.

Let’s remember that score line & use it to spur us on to bigger & better things.

WPL15. SSFA (3) v Northern Tigers (4)

SSFA Goal Scorers:  Amelia 2, Rebecca 1

Playing away this week we started strong & Amelia scored her first of two goals in the first 10 minutes after a lovely through ball from Bianca.  The second goal came from transitional play from our backs through to some nice midfield play by Bec & Bianca & finished with a composed shot.  The Tigers pulled back one goal & we went to half time 2 -1.WPL15 1 May WPL15 1 May.2

Early into the second half the Tigers evened the score, but as all great teams do, we answered quickly back with an exquisitely executed shot from outside the centre circle by Bec.  The excitement continued, Enya saved a penalty midway through the second half & then Tigers had a goal disallowed for kicking the ball out of Enya’s hands which just kept us in front & we hounded the Tigers goals with Charlotte just missing out scoring our 4th goal by hitting the post.

The Tigers are a strong team & pushed us all the way, with Zoe, Tahlee, Emily, Bailey & Lauren holding our defence until about 7 minutes remaining when the Tigers put away the equalizer.  Our midfields well supported by Ash worked tirelessly against a pumped team, but unfortunately with seconds to go we conceded a free kick & went down 4-3.

All in all an exciting game, some great football, with valiant & consistent effort from all of our girls.

WPL13. SSFA (1) v Northern Tigers (4)

Goal Scorer – Keira Danes

After the long trip to the tiger’s lair we weren’t very happy about playing in the rain, but we soldiered on and were ready to play our best, rain hail or shine. As the whistle blew the rain fell even harder and we realised we were in for a tough match.

WPL13 1 MayHolly started hard and fast up the left wing but couldn’t seem to keep her feet on the slippery ground. The Northern Tigers had a few early attempts that were abruptly stopped by Hoffy’s fantastic defence in the backs. The first interchange provided a renewed energy on the field.  The forwards had a couple shots but missed by a whisker each time.

Captain Keira came in from the mid field to score our first and only goal of the game.  Fantastic effort Kiera. As the rain eased, our efforts to score more goals didn’t. Going into the second half 1 nil up we knew we had a big job ahead to remain on top.  Unfortunately our efforts didn’t pay off as the Northern Tigers had really good ball skills and were very fast to the ball.

An awesome effort by everyone today. Well done team!
