This year the Far South Under 15 Team competed at Valentine Sports Park. This tournament was tough from start to finish. The history books will show that MFS U15’s finished 3rd in the 2017 tournament. What the books won’t show is the enthusiasm, the vitality and the exuberant vigour with which the players approached every game and with which their excited supporters celebrated.
Although we lost 2 and drew 1 of our first 3 games. Stefan and I were proud of the way the boys continued to battle and the way they handled themselves overcoming this setback. The team responded to this impediment with a much improved and sustained effort putting in hard work game after game. The team discovered that working together, holding your shape and passing produces results. Most importantly the team as a whole realised that without investing hard work we weren’t going to produce anything of value on game day. This eventuated in the boys winning their last 5 games scoring 17 goals and conceding NONE.
We had created enough chances to win all games but did not take them when presented. We probably deserved more from this tournament with the type of football played. Perhaps the most enjoyable part in the teams development was watching them maintaining possession of the ball. The boys used their short passing game to frustrate their opponents and at times their vocal crowd, resulting in oppositions scrambling for most of the game. We looked good when we pass and move, when we use wall passes and use screen runs through the opposition goal area. By the end of the tournament all players showed improvement in leadership, composure and confidence in their skills and each other.
Players played entertaining free flowing one touch football in a style that they had not had a chance to play at club level and they all enjoyed this freedom. The enjoyment showed in their football with great team shape, better ball movement and creative plays that pleased all who witnessed them.
As coaches of this team all we can say is that Stefan and I enjoyed every minute of football the boys played and that we are proud of every player. Well done boys you gave Stefan and me, your parents and the rest of the crowd at Valentine 100% all week and your football was great to watch. The boys are a credit to their families, Associations and current teams that they play for, good luck with your footballing futures and we hope to see you around the grounds.
