First Grade. Lost 3 – 0
Not quite the result we were looking for today. Nepean got on the board in the 38th minute when they had their 3rd free kick from the same spot. While the first two hit the cross bar this one snuck in.
We had some good play in the first half and with possession 50/50 at half time we knew we were in the game. 13 minutes into the second half, one of many interesting refereeing decisions, found us down to 10 players for the rest of the game. Nepean’s second goal was a lucky one, a miskick from us seen them take advantage and their third was a shot which I am sure Emma had until it took a deflection off one of our players.
I have to give credit to the girls who dug deep and hung in there and never gave up, even being down on the scoreboard and in numbers.
We will get a chance to meet Nepean again at home so we will chalk this one up to experience, time to move on and focus on next weeks game.
Thoughts were with Annelotte today.
Today we played Nepean in the 6th round. We all came to cook park with a positive attitude, lucky enough to have beautiful weather. We all continued this attitude with a good warmup leading up to the game.
In the first 10 minutes of the first half, I think that we switched the play, got balls behind their defence, however towards the end, we started to play like we were under pressure and just wanted to kick it. We needed to relax on the ball, get our heads up and look for a pass too feet and if so can we can switch the play. We created many chances in the front third and was unlucky enough to not execute it and finish.
Into the sheds at half time, a great pep talk by Britt and Morgan, got us ready to win the second half. The second half started with fast pace, we were stringing some good passes, however Nepean were pressing and making it difficult for us, but finally the break we were all looking for after rewarded a corner from the left hand side, the ball was swung in and flashed across the goal mouth for Meg to pop up at the far post and finish with a well time shot which hit the back of the net, we were all so excited!! We sure played hard for the remaining time we had and we took home a well-deserved victory!!
Well done to Lucy and Meg in the 13’s that backed up for us this week! We all played extremely well as a team. Go Sutherland!! (Written by Janan Codmani).
WPL U13 – SSFA vs Nepean Result: loss: 2-1
We started the morning with a sleep in due to an unusual late game time. I don’t know if the sleep in helped us or not because the game was a mixed bag. Some great plays amongst some moments of slightly panicked play. After a great warm up, we were pumped and ready for the match. We started confidently and held possession quite well. In the first half, our defenders chased down everything that came their way and Brodie in goals came out and controlled the ball brilliantly. Even though we stopped everything that come our way defensively, we struggled to get the ball through to our number nine. In saying this, we did get a few shots on goal, but good goal keeping from Nepean kept the score line at nil all going in to half time.
We lost a bit of composure and had some messy play at the beginning of the second half, which resulted in 2 unlucky goals in quick succession. Instead of letting the situation get us down we lifted our play, and listened to Geoff who kept telling us to relax on the ball. A strike from Meagan found the ball in the back of the net after a great cross from Millie and suddenly we were back in the game!
The last quarter showed the true Sutho spirit as we really lifted and were hungry for the ball. We were first to the ball and dominated, causing panic for the opponent. We attacked at every opportunity, and has several close calls but just couldn’t finish a second goal.
As coach Geoff said in the change room afterwards, it wasn’t a bad thing for us to experience our first loss of the season, and I was proud of how well the team lifted and how we played good football.
We will get ‘em next time! (By Lucy)
WPL17. SSFA 2 vs Nepean 1
This week the girls had Nepean, and over the last few years they have been a team that we have struggled to play well against. Again like most weeks we started well with good passing and structure and straight away we were creating chances. Both our wide players Bridget and Christina were making some great runs down both sides of the field and putting some wonderful crosses over but just like last week we couldn’t capitalize as missed chances went by. Jasmine tested the keeper with a good left foot strike from outside the box, Brodie from a short corner had a great shot saved by the Nepean keeper, Bec struck a good right foot shot from outside the box again Nepean keeper saves with Bridget finding the keeper with the rebound, it looked like it was going to be one of the days until a great team goal was scored halfway through the first half. Emily and Brodie combined well at the back and sent Christina down the left who made a fantastic run into the box passes to Bridget who finds Bec with a great shot inside the left hand side of the post to make it a well deserved 1-0 lead. With our confidence up, our defence solid the team was pushing the ball around well and more chances were coming but the Nepean keeper was having a blinder and she just seemed to be in the right spot every time we shot. Bella was now making her presence felt with some great runs and crosses but unfortunately we couldn’t get on the end these to punish Nepean. Halftime 1-0.
The second half started exactly like the first Sutherland dominating all over park and within minutes we were up 2-0, Again good movement down the left with Bella crossing finding Christina who turned and hits with her left and scores. It was only a matter of time till we saw a third. We were creating numerous opportunities Georgia this time putting over a cross for Jasmine for her to head over the bar, then Georgia trying a shot herself from outside which the keeper brilliantly pushed over the bar. Again and again we went forward with some wonderful teamwork but we could not get that third and decisive goal to finish off the game. You could start to see the girls starting to lose their structure giving away possession and pushing too far forward and with five minutes to go Nepean scored a great individual goal to make the score 2-1. The girl’s did hold on for a 2-1 win but should have won comfortably with the amount of possession and opportunities. This week will be a lot tougher bring on Bankstown. Thank you again to the 15s for helping out once more.
Nepean turned on a beautiful afternoon, the game started a little later than normal, although Coach Mark turned up at normal time!! The team had some new combinations with Lily starting centre back and Toni in the mid. Nepean started strong with them pressing forward and putting pressure on our passing game. The Nepean pitch had a lot of uneven bounce placing our girls under pressure to find feet. Not many chances in the first half and you would say that Nepean had majority of possession, until 30 seconds late in the half when Sutherland intercepted at the back and through a couple of quick combination passes Maddie found the back of the net with the half time whistle sounding. The second half saw Sutherland start with a lot more enthusiasm and were challenging harder in the contest and winning possession. The second goal saw Toni hit a smashing half volley that the keeper had no chance of saving and the third goal was Kara doing good lead up work and passing the ball on to a hard running Zoe Yeats who crossed and forced the opposition to score an own goal. Three nil – Go Sutherland! (By Lily)
