WPL Sharks vs Northbridge 27/5/12

Well what a game between Sutherland and Northbridge, a thoroughly entertaining game from both sides who produced at times some quality football. With Kristen unfortunately out with a hamstring injury her energy was going to be missed.

Sutherland started well getting the ball wide on the Seymour pitch and letting Jess G and Bella take on the defence down the wings with great support from Erin and Mel. For once the girls scored early with a quickly taken throw out from Courtney to Zoe who inturn put a ball through to Jess G, she then took the ball down the left and put over a wonderful cross to the middle, where Bella after making a great run was on hand to calmly slot the ball away into the back of the net to give Sutherland a 1-0 lead. The girls probably started to believe this might be an easy win but Northbridge were not going to have that and quickly responded with their own goal. Catching the Sutherland defence out through a few girls ball watching instead of marking they too scored from a great cross to equalize after 15 mins. Sutherland needed to get back to playing with more patience because they tended to rush things and give away possesion too frequently.

The rest of the first half flowed from end to end with Northbridge having a goal disallowed from offside and also seeing a shot sail over the bar. Sutherland inturn saw DA shoot wide and Lauren hit a good shot only to have a defender desperately block it from going towards goal. 1-1 at halftime.

With the coach instructing the girls to dominate the middle and get to the ball first this half, it was going to be a fascinating 25 mins and the girls didn’t disappoint from both sides, it was an enthralling contest with Georgia, Meadsy and Erin tackling hard at every challenge and our willing defenders Zoe, Lily, Ashlee, Emily and Bella doing their best to hold out a very determined Northbridge side. It was very entertaining and the crowd started to become very vocal in there support of both teams sensing that one opportunity was going to win this game.

Jess G was having an intense battle on the left with her opponent and Sian was doing some great work down the right with one great chance being ruled offside. With about five minutes to go DA received a good ball from Mel to beat one defender and hit a good shot on the run only to see it go wide, and at the other end Courtney made a couple of crucial saves to deny Northbridge victory.

The fulltime scored ended one all, at times you could have held and controlled possesion a bit more but what a game to watch, all you girls deserve congratulations on a fantastic entertaining game. Bring on Sydney UNI.

WPL 12 Sharks vs Sydney Uni 3/6/12

This was a game that the girls were eager to get underway. The chance to test themselves against the only team to be undefeated so far this season. The first half got under way with both teams getting a pretty even share of possession and the battles for every 50/50 ball was intense. the midfield of Georgia, Erin and Mel were not giving an inch. The back 4 were really holding it together and a stand out performance from Lilly filling in at centre back helped to keep us at 0-0 at halftime.

The second half started and in the first 5 minutes Sydney Uni looked to have stepped up a gear. An attacking raid from Uni ended with a good cross and an unfortunate ricochet leaving their striker with an easy tap in from 5 yards, 1-0 down. The goal gave Sydney Uni the confidence boost they needed and found themselves winning the 50/50 and with more time on the ball started to show why they were still undefeated after 10 rounds. The Sutherland girls fought the whole way to the end and had a couple of chances late in the second half that would have given the game a nail biting finish, but another goal from Uni put the game to bed.

Well played girls and it was a great effort, the scoreline didn’t reflect how close the game was. A good week at training will help to get prepared for next week vs league leaders Marconi.
