RYC 16. SSFA 1 v Northern Suburbs 1
SSFA Goal Scorers: Nathan Wedesweiler
A sunny Sunday saw us playing Northern Suburbs at Crimson Hill’s synthetic pitch.
Northern suburbs were on the front foot immediately and surprised us with an early goal. Sutherland then switched into gear and Oscar’s speed and skill down the left saw him assist Wedders who stuck away the equaliser. One all after eight minutes. The opposition responded by continuing to probe our defence, but our backline managed to repel anything that was thrown at them. Despite Brendan, Nick and Will controlling the midfield, Northern Suburbs seemed to be receiving a generous number of free kicks. Some nice interplay then led to Wedders assisting Josh for the keeper to save at full stretch. Some good saves by Hunter late in the first half ensured it was all even at the break.
With a slight tail breeze against us we restarted slowly. A nice through ball saw Oscar unleash, however the keeper saved low. At the back JB, Foxy and Macca continued to hold strong in defence. With play starting to open up, Sutherland with some lovely lateral movement, created some fine opportunities up front. For most of the second stanza the opposition seemed to be relying on the long ball whilst Sutherland’s creative play led to Wedders hitting the post after nice lead up work by Nick. Brendan gave his usual 100% in the midfield and kindly reminded the opposition that complaining to the referee would not lead to the official changing his mind!
Overall, 2 fairly evenly matched teams, with Sutherland gaining the ascendancy in the second half but unable to find the net. Thanks to Ben, Jasper and Hunter who stepped in today and performed admirably.
RYC13. Sutherland Shire 0 – Northern Suburbs 1
Our second last game and the season on the line with a win ensuring we finished top 2, and a loss meaning we were out of contention. Earlier wins over Northern stood for nothing as Brian encouraged the boys to focus on the task.
Northern looked a different side to our earlier trial match as they moved the ball well and were patient, looking for inroads. Sutherland looked impatient as they tried to overplay their passes and hit the miracle ball rather than put the ball on the ground and build up their attack. The arm wrestle continued and it was nil all at half time.
Sutherland looked strong in the second half and a number of shot just missed, or hit the woodwork. With 5 minutes to go Northern made a strong push up the middle and scored. They had one opportunity and converted well.
With 1 game left the boys are unable to finish higher than 3rd and will have to play well to ensure they finish on a winning note.
RYC14 vs Northern Suburbs. Score: 1-1
A warm day on the synthetic grass at Lindfield. A few boys out & a few slower than usual due to yesterday’s grand final. Eventually we got into our groove & a Jett cross went across face of goal to Hudson who shoots & is saved with a tap in to Ethan. More pressure and great save from a fine Bushy shot. We kept pressure on them until silly mistake gave them their only chance and 1-1 at half time.
The second half we created a lot of chances but couldn’t put it in the back of the net. We defended well & didn’t give a shot. Northern Suburbs were strong on & off the ball & hussled us off the ball a lot through the middle. We still reverted to the long ball a bit too much when under pressure & look much better with the ball on the ground.
The draw keeps us at least 3 points clear at top in a better goal difference. Game on for last game against Gladesville
