WPL17 SSFA 2-0 win vs Bankstown (Semi-final)
Wow, what a commanding performance. It’s still safe to say this was Sutherland at their absolute best. The final scoreline of 2-0 does not show the dominance but check some of these match statistics. Completed passes: Sutherland 178 vs Bankstown 68. Tackles: Sutherland 33 vs Bankstown 39. Total shots: Sutherland 15 vs Bankstown 4. Shots on goal: Sutherland 9 vs Bankstown 0. In the second half, Bankstown made just 23 completed passes and 22 tackles.
Here’s how the game panned out.
There was some work to do at both ends of the field early on. An early shot by Rebecca, a cross by Bella and then a super tackle by Emily when the team was caught short at the back. Jaz was heavily involved in the early stages, showing great strength on the ball. Bankstown were getting some space in the midfield. A cross that bobbled out of Matilda’s hands was only half cleared away but Sutherland escaped. Shortly after, Matilda came had to come boldly out of the box to clear a through ball. Bankstown’s strong period didn’t last long though, as Sutherland started to string some passes together. A series of passes downfield were starting to catch Bankstown short, with Rebecca and Leanna prominent. A key moment came from a long range free kick from Bankstown. As the ball curled towards the inside of the right post, there was Emily positioned as precisely as the free kick. Emily’s header off the line sent us straight into a counter attack and all of a sudden Bella was charging past the half way with only the goalie to beat. The crowd willed her shot in as it trickled past the goal following a desperate deflection from the goalie. Another lovely chain of passing involving Bridget, Bec and Georgia saw a shot from Georgia go wide. Bankstown were struggling to contain the speed and intensity of our attacking line, with Sophia, Bella and Leanna prominent. Then at 30 minutes, what a goal! The sweetest of strikes from 25 metres from Sydney’s most dangerous centre back, Emily, after a lovely one-two with Bec. Sutherland finished strongly showing speed and intensity, with Bridget’s strong physical play and Grace doing some good work in tight down the left side. Half time 1-0.
It was game on in the first minute of the second half with Grace passing to Bec, whose shot went wide. A key defensive header by Brodie defused a potential threat but then a cross from Bankstown found a player open on the 6 yard box, who seemed to stumble with the open goal beckoning. Somehow we survived. But that was it for Bankstown’s attack for the half. Jaz was having a cracking game in mid field, with a strong tackle on the edge of the box, followed shortly by a shot from an outstanding control and shoot from Bec, which was palmed away for a corner. A lovely cross from Emily on the right and Grace was just unable to connect in front of goal. Zoe chimed in with a long range crack from centre back. A shot from distance by Georgia after a cleared corner required a great save. Sutherland were in control. The dynamic Sophia passed to Jaz in the box but the close range shot was blocked by a desperate Bankstown. Leanna was providing great support at the back as well as defence, making an important header when under pressure from a weak clearance. The communication was loud and clear from the bench. Jayika calls as she runs into space down the right and Bec puts a beautifully weighted ball at her feet. Jayika’s cross was blocked but this was football at its best. Emily, Tahlee and Leanna showed their class as they threaded the ball down the left sideline from defence to attack. So much pressure from Sutherland, but still only 1-0. And then we cracked them on the 20 minute mark. Some good initial work from Jayika with a long ball across field to put us on the attack. Some tight work by Brodie, who got the ball to Georgia, who then slipped a gorgeous pass in behind the defence to a flying Leanna. Still high after her hat-trick last week, Leanna nailed it inside the near post. Oh yeah! But our girls weren’t resting on that. Sutherland steal the ball from the kick off and some great work by Christina saw us almost go up another goal. Sophia continued to set a cracking tempo up front, making a long sustained run in behind the defence. With no thought for her well-being, she went in hard to challenge the keeper outside the box but fortunately for Bankstown, the ball rebounded away. The last few minutes Sutherland showed their class and control at the back, with Zoe, Emily, Tahlee and Matilda moving the ball around the field, back then forward again, with Bankstown looking tired chasing all over the field but unable to get near the ball. Full time and a deserved 2-0 win. Outstanding players all over the park in a superb team performance. Grand Final. Bring it on.
WPL U13s. SSFA vs Marconi Won 3 – 2 (Semi Final)
WOOHOO… we are heading to the Grand Final, with a fantastic 3 – 2 win in nail biting extra time against the Marconi Stallions. We played some unbelievable football and in the end, it was an awesome game to watch. Within the first five minutes we had three shots on goal, with Tilly kicking a killer goal in the first three. The energy we displayed showed our commitment to wanting to be in the grand final. This was then followed by another amazing goal from Georgia putting us up 2 -1 in the first 15 minutes. We played with intensity and we were fierce. The second half came around with a score of 2 -1. We couldn’t control the ball, as well as the first half and Marconi evened up the score, with a free kick and it was 2 -2. We then went into extra time and this is when Megan scored an incredible goal to take us into the lead. Abbey and Nicole did brilliant in controlling the defensive line. Whilst the midfield worked hard to make an opportunity for us to get the ball into the back of the net. Forward’s did an outstanding job running up and down the line to cross over and shoot. Overall we “defeated the undefeated”.
Well done to everyone, we deserved to win. You girls played awesome and we are going to smash it in the Grand Final.
