WPL Res Grade. SSFA 2 Vs Bankstown 1
It was a tough ask for the Sutherland Shire FA backing up from Sunday, while the opposition had the bye and were fresh and ready to rumble. The opening exchanges were fairly even with Sutho being pressured but managed some counter attack and had a couple of good chances. We finally received a corner and the ball was played back to Lauren, GOALLLL what a strike, top left corner the keeper had no chance. The half was Sutherland’s and we started to dominate, but right on half time the Bankstown’s best player beat a couple of defenders and set up a beautiful cross back for a Goal. 1-1 a disappointing end to the first half which didn’t reflect the Sutherland dominance.
The second half started and the girls switched off a little bit, with the Bankstown girls pressing hard and the majority of the play was played predominately in Sutherland’s defensive half. Sutherland showed some true grit and continually turned down the attacking onslaught. Some much needed reserves came on and added some renewed resilience, and Sutherland showed some good attacking counterattacks. With 10 minutes to go Zoe intercepted a ball and played to Mel who was one on one with the keeper, with a cool head she placed the ball in the back of the net 2-1 to Sutherland. The referee was a little bit of a character and shuffled around the centre circle and made some interesting decisions, although Sutherland were lucky not to have a direct penalty go against them. The Bankstown girls never gave up and kept pressing to the end, but this young team of good friends showed the true reason why we won the minor premiership and will help Sutherland win the Club Championship. Onwards and upwards, bring on the semi-finals – up the mighty Sutherland! (By Zoe H)
WPL17. SSFA 0 – Bankstown 3
The Round 16 clash saw 1st playing 2nd on a very warm day. Bankstown began well & only 3 mins into the match, they had a shot on goal, only just going over the cross bar. Again about 10 mins later, another great attempt by Bankstown, but this time a sensational saves by Matilda when she tipped it over the bar. In 5 min time, Sutherland’s luck had ran out, when Bankstown took a free-kick, went hard & skimmed into the goal mouth, and after a real scramble, the ball dribbled across the line for the 1st goal.
Sutherland tried hard to rally and were starting to link some passes together. Bankstown had 3 more corners in the next 15 mins, which caused some anxious moments. In the 35th min Bankstown, had a powerful shot from 25m out, which found the top-right corner of the net, giving Bankstown a 2 – 0 lead. Bankstown dominated the first half, but they did enjoy having a strong breeze behind them.
The 2nd half was an improved showing by Sutherland, with some chances being created. Bankstown’s defence and an on form keeper did enough though to spoil each attacking raid. It seemed to be one of those days when things just were not going to work. Around the 75th min, the Bankstown # 9 got a great ball through the middle & her well taken shot was beautifully saved by Matilda again, causing a corner for Bankstown. The corner was fired into the box, but while attacking the ball, we scored an own goal to make the final score 3 – 0 to Bankstown.
This now leaves both teams equal 1st on 32 points each, with a goal differential of +2 in favour of Sutherland. Both teams today are likely to play again in the Major Semi. Bring it on!!
WPL U15s – SSFA vs Bankstown. 0-1 loss
An important game for the Sutherland girls. As the whistle blew immediate pressure was put on Bankstown. Sutherland’s possession was strong against Bankstown with our eagerness to get and keep the ball. The team held off their attackers, and we sharply moved the ball from player to player as we made our way towards the goal with the control of the midfielders. Crosses from our 7 and 11 put some good chances in front of the net. Our forwards made the Bankstown defence lines job extremely difficult with our continued runs up the line and pressure on their backs. With ten minutes to go of the 1st half, our football quickly turned into pingpong. Back and forth and back and forth. 2nd half whistle goes and we picked up where we left off. Control is regained and our game is again sharp. A fast shot on goal leaves us 1-0 down. Frazzled, we pick ourselves back up and continued playing our game. With ten minutes to go we frantically played, unable to get an equalising goal. With our season coming to an end let’s finish strong. GO GIRLS!!! (by Amelia)
WPL U13s – SSFA vs Bankstown. 1-0 win. Round 16 brought 16 slightly sleepy girls to a ground at Regents Park to play a game of soccer against Bankstown. Kicking off with a solid warm up, we were ready to play. The game began with a slow start, the ball going back and forth between the teams and by half time it was still nil all. The whistle blew for the 2nd half and we were off. Tara with her amazing headers, she was certainly a head of the rest. Awesome work in the back line by Lucy, Nicole, Georgia and Bella they definitely weren’t letting anyone through. Some loud cheering by our cheerleaders Zoe and Jade. Great combination plays by Bee and Giules as they worked their way down the field and an unbelievable shot by Milly that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Some awesome work by our goalie, Brodie, let’s just say she’s a keeper. After fantastic runs by Bronte and Aiesha and a lot of amazing crosses from our strikers Meg and Tilly, we finally got the result. A great goal by Meagan from an incredible cross by Tilly. Now we can’t wait to tackle the top team, Marconi next week. (by Abbey)
WPL 15 Sutherland 2 v Sydney Olympic 3
Today’s game put us up against Sydney Olympic who were 3 points above us on the ladder, so we were hoping for a win to level with them. After a long time waiting for this game, we took to the field and started the game strong with some great passing combinations. The first half saw us concede a goal which put us 1-0 down. However, when the second half commenced, we showed Olympic how much we wanted this win and were rewarded with two beautiful goals, scored by Paris and Janan. We were 2-1 up. We kept working hard but Sydney Olympic showed their eagerness and scored to put the score level at 2-2. Both teams were looking for any opportunity to get the win and unfortunately for us, Sydney Olympic found the net in the dying minutes of the game, making this only our second loss of the season.
We are all looking forward to playing our second round match against Sydney Olympic in 2 weeks time. Let’s go Sutho!
