SSFA WPL v Southern Branch (Sun 17th July)

Club Championship. What a year we hope 2017 will end up. Sutherland Shire FA WPL are in fine form and heading the FNSW Club Championship with just 4 rounds to go before the finals. First Grade are currently in second place with a tight gap to first, Reserve Grade are clear at the top of their table and the U17’s are fighting neck and neck to retain their place in first. We are all hoping for a strong finish to the season and our senior teams to continue to stay at the top of the leader board, the club to win the FNSW Club Championship and the skills and abilities shown during the season bringing success to all of our girls teams in the forthcoming finals series.

Keep up the good work that all coaches, players and supporters have shown to-date.

First Grade. Won 2 – 1

After a road trip down South, it was a beautiful sunny day for football. Last time we played Southern we managed to net a few goals but playing Southern at their home ground is always going to be tougher. With them having a rest last weekend, they came out firing in the first 20 minutes. Our girls kept them scoreless and eventually we started to play our game, we started to find space and we moved the ball around.

In the 26th minute Morgan put us in front on the scoreboard with a great finish. We went into half time knowing we were going ok but there was room for improvement.

We dominated possession in the second half switching the ball and moving Southern around and the girls were rewarded in the 54th minute with Brittany, once again, getting on the scoreboard.

In the 74th minute we seemed to drop off for just a minute and that’s all it took for Southern to score. This made for a very nervous 16 minutes for both coach and bench. The girls worked hard in defense and didn’t let Southern equalize.

Tough game next week against Nepean at home but I know the girls are ready for it.

WPL17. SSFA 3   Vs   Southern Branch 0

After a disappointing draw at home to Inter Lions last week, the girls took the long early Sunday morning drive down to South Nowra where Southern Branch FC hosted them at Ison Park. Despite the contest appearing straight forward it was very much a case of respecting your opponents with every point crucial as we head into the final five matches of the season.

Coach Steve Brown picked a strong starting line up and the girls stamped their authority on the match early with Captain Georgia James and Jasmine Stretton marshalling the midfield to control the tempo of the match. Territorial dominance ensued with Sutherland pinning their opponents in their own half for lengthy periods.

This sustained pressure resulted in the opening goal from Georgia James on the twelve minute mark after the ball fell to her on the left edge of the penalty area and she rifled in a low sharp shot beating the keeper on her near post. Before you could blink the lead was doubled when only a minute later Emily Thurgar hit the target from distance, effortlessly lobbing the keeper with her sweet right foot.

Southern Branch to their credit try to play the game the right way, keeping the ball on the deck and passing out from the back. Unfortunately against such a powerful high pressing team like Sutherland, any mistakes can be severely punished as a series of strong runs down the right hand side by Isabella Fry clearly illustrated. This pattern of play continued for the rest of the half with the Sutherland girls taking their foot ever so slightly off the peddle with little threat being applied to their own goal.

So we headed in to half time with the most dangerous thing in football – a “comfortable” two goal lead.

Fortunately the break allowed the girls to reset and a continuation of strong play led to the important third goal in the 55th minute. A lovely lay off on the edge of the box by Isabella Fry saw Georgia James grab her second for the match with a well placed shot into the bottom left corner.

You’re always most vulnerable after scoring and within a minute of play resuming Southern Branch had their best chance when a low dangerous cross from the left saw Sutherland defender Tahlee Zammit put her body on the line to clear the ball only a few feet from the goal face with her opponent bearing down on her. With no further scoring Sutherland closed the game out confidently with our goalie Akala Howell and brilliant back four including running machine Brodie Momsen, Emily Thurgar and the ever reliable Zammit twins keeping their sixth clean sheet for the season.

The win keeps us on top of the ladder with an improved goal difference as we head back home to take on Nepean FC at Harrie Denning Centre next Sunday.

WPL 15’s 0 v Southern Branch WPL 15’s 0

Round 14 found us up against Southern Branch. We went into this game feeling very excited and eager to win as we beat Southern 4-2 last round. However, this was not evident on the pitch as we started our first half very rough, not playing our normal type of football but were still able to find our way and take a few shots at goal. Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalise and as a result, we became hungrier to win and the composure of the game changed towards the end of first half.

After a bumpy first half, we were more determined to win and prove our first half isn’t our type of game. We improved our pass completion rate and frequently moved the ball through the gaps to then play in behind to our wingers. Summer and Jaydan created many chances to score by putting great crosses in from the wings but we were unable to get a foot on the ball and score. We dominated the majority of possession in 2nd half which gave us more opportunities to score, with shots from Paris, Summer, Charlotte and Janan. Following this, Southern Branch raised their intensity and began to dominate towards the end of 2nd half. Luckily, they were unable to score and the final whistle blew ending the game at 0-0.

WPL 13’s 4 vs Southern Branch   1

It was a cold, early start to the morning in Nowra. We had a good warm up that set the mood for everyone, however we still conceded a goal in the early minutes. This didn’t stop us as Meagan then scored a goal that made us one all at half time. The second part of the first half was filled with lots of chances at goal that unfortunately did not get in the back of the net.

The second half we came on determined to win. The first goal to be scored in the second half was a goal from Meagan. This made the score two to one. We kept on pushing and switching the play until our work finally paid off. The last two goals to be scored were scored by myself which then made the score four to one at the end of the game. Overall we played a great game that was filled with lots of switching of play and great effort from all the girls. (By Milly)

Res Grade. SSFA Won 6 – 0

Round 14 of 18 rounds is getting down to the business end of the season and knowing that our main rivals for the title, Bankstown, were held midweek to a one all draw by Ravens, it meant that a victory against Southern Branch could see us four points clear of Bankstown. Injuries once again affected the starting line up with Di M, Lauren K and Roisin C sidelined and regular goalkeeper Steph L unavailable. Fortunately we had Emma G guarding the net and Nic B and Bridget F in the outfield. The match started slow with Sutherland failing to set the pace, allowing Southern to match us for a while however it was down to Emily W who broke down the right, cut inside and had the ‘keeper one on one to put it past her, into the bottom right hand corner. Emily continued to torment the Southern defence throughout the entire match. The second goal came through a combination of Maddie F and Bridget F, with Bridget heading one home. Two nil at the break. The second half saw Sutherland more determined to dominate play and add to the goal tally while the backline remained impenetrable just as it has all season. Sutherland continued to attack with Emily W topping off her smashing game with a hat trick, and Kristen K and Rebecca D each slamming one in. Pretty happy with a 6 nil win knowing we could’ve run them off the park. (By Larissa)
