WPL SSFA v FNSW Institute (Sunday 12th May)

Reserve Grade. SSFA 1 v Institute 7
It was a cold, windy Mother’s Day today and unfortunately our girls couldn’t bring a happy end to a dreary day. But try they did. Before we knew it we were down 3-0. The Institute team were a highly skilled team and great to watch and this is what happened to our girls in the first half on the field; we were on the back foot and watching. At half time we were 5-0. Our team talk at half time was: the game is not over, we need to adapt and solve the problems on the field by talking and instructing each other. The girls, Mark and Geoff agreed the team needed to squeeze the Institute out to the sides and not over complicate the game.
During the second half we were in the right head space, and attack, defend and squeeze the Institute we did. This determination saw Rosch make a winning tackle, then a pass off to Emma G, who passed to Lauren in the back line, who then crossed a long ball to a sprinting Kate down the sideline who passed off to Beth who took on the goalie and smashed it home. The second half saw the Institute score only 2 goals to our one, the shell shock had worn off from the first half and we were now playing better soccer. Great game by Emma Gidney in goals, who was battered continuously in the first half – she will need a radox tonight! Many awe inspiring saves were made. Thanks to Ollie our new friend and sideline helper from Queensland who kept us company on the bench. All the best in your National rock climbing competition. The team rap up was – the person with the ball needs options and in tough games the whole team has to help. Our attitude after a poor first half, didn’t drop – we entered the second half with heads high and a “we haven’t lost” attitude. Good on you girls. Not the present Us Mums were hoping for but we (and the Dads) are proud of you. 😊

WPL 17. We came onto the field ready for the challenge ahead. We knew it would be difficult but the opportunity was there. The whistle blew and Sutho was straight in the tackles. Shifting as a unit we attempted to stop any possible attacking opportunities. Working hard together to gain possession the girls did just that creating some forward runs forcing institute to transition fast. With creative forward runs and strong defending in transitions we left the pitch at half time with an empty score line. The win was still in reach.
Coming out into the second half with the urge to get on the score board Sutho started fast and strong keeping possession and attacking in their half of the field with a few offside calls denying us goals. Institute snagged the opportunity in transition with a well constructed goal with quick passes.
We were determined to put up a fight so Sutho got straight back into it challenging for the ball. Within a few minutes Izzy snagged the ball putting it through to Leanna. With a great dummy by Chris and an even better run by Leanna she was out past the defense with a 1v1 with the keeper! With ease, Leanna slotted the ball in the corner of the goal, evening up the score board 1-1. In less then a minute we had another attacking opportunity, a near miss warning Institute that Sutho is here for the win. Unfortunately Institute took hold of their attack and found the corner of the goal putting them in front with a 2-1 lead. With some great saves from keeper Bella and the team defending we denied them many goal scoring opportunities. Unortunely in the last 5 minutes Institute managed to take hold of 2 more attacks finishing their shots, taking the win with a 4-1 lead. Sutho put up a fight until the end and unfortunetly did not get the 3 points on the ladder. Good game girls and thanks to Alex and Paris for helping us out. Written by Isabella Georgievski.

U14s SSFA 1 vs FNSW Institute 2
Today we woke up and headed out to Valentines Sports Park to play against NSW Institute. We had a solid warm up and were ready to play. The first half of the match was pretty good. We had good passes and balls to the forwards and after a few attempts Tilly ended up scoring an excellent goal. Unfortunately after a few rough decisions Institute managed to score of a free kick, making it 1-1 at half time.

We started the second half well and held institute out from scoring for a while but In the last 15 minutes they scored a goal making it 2-1. We held our heads up and kept on going but unfortunately we just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net.
Even though we didn’t win I believe we played very well and had one of pure best games of the season. Great job to all the girls
