WPL SSFA v Northbridge (Sunday 27th May)

Reserve Grade . SSFA 0 v Mariners 3
The focus was the “No Go Zone” and the 6 second press before moving into our defensive position. Our girls did this today, with Kara making great sideline runs and passes to Kate who crossed to either Beth or Gen, it was unlucky that the ball could not find the back of the net. A run away ball saw Northbridge’s first goal, and not long after the second goal to Northbridge after Sutherland withheld 5 corners in a row. Another great game by Emma our goalie. In the second half we tried to tap over Northbridge heads to our running strikers, but it just wasn’t our day to settle the goal score. A late play by Northbridge sealed the game to 3-0. The score was not indicative of how the girls played today. Each one could be individually mentioned for their part – a few highlights being great hassles from Kate, pressing from Lauren and consistency up the back with Maddie, Kellie, Kara and Zoe. Welcome to Rory our new member of the team.

WPL17. Round 12 saw us up against North Shore Mariners FC. It was our second encounter against this side where we previously drew with them 1-1. After being on a high from last week’s victory, the girls were eager to play quality football and get a result. We went down 2-0 in the first half after conceding off two set pieces with a corner that appeared to go out and a free kick just outside the box. Although we were down 2-0 we kept fighting and were still working hard to not let the game go. All our hard work was rewarded when Kiara scored a goal from the edge of the box just dipping under the crossbar. (Half Time Score: 2-1)
After the halftime break, we came into the second half hyped and ready to fight for another 35 minutes. We were unlucky with our attack, hitting shots at the keeper, over the bar and just wide. North Shore Mariners FC made the scoreline 3-1 after we lost the ball at the edge of their box and they counter-attacked. After conceding the third goal, most of the girl’s heads and spirits dropped resulting in slopping play which lead to their fourth goal.
An excellent effort from all the girls today, as they all fought from the kick off to full time. We played well as individuals but even better as a team and we will soon be rewarded for all our efforts.

We started the morning off with a nice sleep in, then made our way out to Northbridge Oval. There, we had a really good warm up and kicked off with a positive attitude. Being the second time we came up against the North Shore Mariners, we were confident in our game plan and were ready to get back onto our winning streak. First half we worked hard but couldn’t get the ball past their back line and unfortunately let in 2 goals. After a good pep talk by Geoff and Georgia we came back onto the field fired up. We kept possession which resulted in more shots on goal, but unfortunately we couldn’t get them in the back of the net. Overall, it was a shame we didn’t score in the second half as we really tried hard and played our game. But heads up for next week against Manly!! Go Sutho! 💙 – Abbey
