Women’s Premiere League Trial Match vs Napean

Match Date:  Sunday 28th February 2016.

 WPL 13’s:  SSFA 1 v Nepean FC 1

Goals:  Mia Murarotto 1

Today we played Nepean; it was our first game against a team in our division. We were all really excited to see how we would go against them and I think that we dominated the first half. Right from the kick off we attacked into their half and had most of the possession throughout the first twenty minutes. They kept on trying to get into our half by going down their left wing but Lucy did a brilliant job defending. Every time they came near her, she would use the players around her to get the ball back up the field. Midfield was also really solid, they controlled the ball well and through the midfield the ball got to our number 10, Mia, who got past three players and slotted the ball into the back of the net. For the first time we were taking the lead in a game. After that goal we got a bit more confident and had quite a few chances on goal through Megan’s great crosses and Emma’s great through balls, but unfortunately none of them got over the line. Nepean got a goal late in the first half which put the score to 1 all. In the second half I think it took us a bit longer to warm up and Nepean came out strong because of their recent goal. Our defence, Lani, Georgia, Hoffy, Holly and Alex with the help of Kyra did a great job stopping the ball from getting through. Daniella, Paris and Kiani also did a great job keeping the ball up the field and pressuring the goal keeper. To our amazing keepers, Aimee and Akala you guys try your hardest every game and did a wonderful job today keeping the ball in front of the line. The final score ended up staying at 1 all but I definitely believe that we will beat them next time.  Great job everyone.

WPL 15’s:  SSFA 3 v Nepean FC 0

What a beautiful day to be watching girl’s soccer….not a cloud in the sky!  We were playing our trial game against Nepean on the Kareela Synthetic Grounds.  The girls dominated the first ten minutes of the game, Amelia, Bianca & Leana all having great shots at goal but were saved by the keeper.  We had a free kick taken by Ash from just outside the box. It was a great shot by Ash but unfortunately just missed the goal.  Midfield domination in the first half but unfortunately the score board didn’t reflect this.  Bianca fought hard & was taken out just outside the box. Ash took the free kick.  She calmly took it..she made it look effortless & it went in just under the crossbar which gave us out first goal of the game.  Not long after we had a corner, the ball was cleared from the corner Zoe had one touch & scored our second goal from the edge or the box….this was Zoe’s first goal ever!  Jayden took a run down the left wing she cut in & took a shot at goal to score our third goal.  Great game with a win of 3 nil.

WPL 17’s:  SSFA 1 v Nepean FC 0

Goals:  Georgia

Today we played up on the Synthetic fields at Kareela on another hot day for Football.

Numbers were down again with Kristen & Emma out with back issues & a couple more not there we had 13 of our squad available. If Emily is out next week we’ll know we have a Captains’ curse on our hands.  Big thanks to Ash for sitting on the bench in case required & helping Denielle with the iPad app.  The game started at a fast pace but we seemed to have the upper hand for most of the game with Nepean not really threatening our goal.  We were controlling the ball well barring a few passes asking a bit much of players.  A quick mention of that by coach Allen at the drinks break seemed to do the trick.  Our goal came after some calm work from our defence & good ball movement from our midfield hitting Bella’s feet up front, she laid it off for Georgia to drive into the box & shoot past the keeper for a fantastic goal.  We probably should’ve had a few more but our lack of composure or willingness to work for a better shot let us down.  We can attribute that to the heat & the fact we’re still building our match fitness.  Emma was rarely called on but cleaned up anything when required & marshalled her backline well.  Mel looked like she’d been playing 6 all her life which adds to her & the teams’ versatility.  A very entertaining game & we look forward to the season starting.

See you all next week for the Season Launch

WPL Reserve Grade:  SSFA 3 v Nepean 2

Goals:   M Farmer, E Blake, G Manos

The girls were given specific instructions; be patient with the ball, keep defensive shape and quick transition.  By the first quarter we were 2 goals up.    M Farmer scored with a well-placed hard ball.    Soon after E Blake slot another in from a very good corner. Back from drinks break and the girls maintained their shape with encouragement from the coach. G Manos made it 3-0 with some persistent chasing of the ball from another corner.  The second half saw two goals scored against us through some scrappy passing and tired players. Coach was happy with the way the girls played and is looking forward to more tactical training as the weeks roll on.  A big thank you to the U17 players and keeper who contributed during the game.  Thank you to our sponsors Gymea Tradies.

More of the beautiful game next week and see you at the game.

WPL 1st Grade:  SSFA 2 v Nepean 1

We knew today was going to be a tough game, always is against Nepean.  The girls played well.  We were unlucky not to net a few more goals.  Nepean play a very different style of game to us but the girls tried to stay focused and play our game, the passing game, finding feet and working the ball towards goal.  It paid off for our first goal, good teamwork lead to a great cross by Rochelle which seen Raegan almost wrap herself around the goal post to score our first.

Nepean hit back with a long range kick that had the perfect length and unfortunately Bianca had the sun in her eyes which made it hard for her to actually get a good look at the ball.  The girls kept their head up and refocused.  Our second goal was scored by Morgan and she was unlucky not to have another with a one on one with the keeper.  There was a little push and shove today, Brit and Nic while Gen and Toni were on the receiving end of a few but bounced back in the way that our players do.  Good effort today girls, it was again another hot day.  Thanks to Jon for helping out.  Looking forward to our season launch next week against the boys.
