WPL12 Sharks vs Manly 24/6/12

This week Sutherland travelled over the Harbour Bridge to take on Manly in a game that the girls needed to win to consolidate a spot in the top five.

Again Sutherland started confidently with good ball movement all over the park, with Meadsy winning the battle in midfield with her usual busy self this enabled DA and Lauren more time to support the forwards.Sutherland were getting the ball wide and the conbination down the left between Bella and Jess G was putting the Manly defence under pressure and this lead to the first goal with Sian getting in a good position to meet Jess G cross with a good strike to make it 1-0.By now Sutherland had probably 75% possesion and were creating many chances but couldn’t capatalize on these, our defence was strong Zoe and Lily stopping any Manly attack with Emily supporting and covering also. Half time came and it was 1-0 Sutherland.

The second half started pretty much like the first with Sutherland controlling and passing well to each other and then out of nowhere no10 from Manly did it all herself receiving a ball in her own half and beating a couple of defenders she hit a good shot passed Courtney to level the score 1-1 in a blink of an eye.Game on.The girls probably for the next ten stopped competing and were not winning the 50/50 ball thus allowing Manly back in the game with Courtney making a couple of good saves. However with our midfield looking dangerous  another goal wasn’t to far away. Kristen and Mel were able to get down the right with Kristen putting over a cross to DA who pushed past a defender and was brought  down and the referee had no hesitation but to award a penelty.DA calmly stepped up and fired past the keeper to make it 2-1 and the final score.

It looked good for most of the game, your hunger to win the ball was fantastic and your teamwork on and off the ball is getting better every week which shows how far you have come in the last 10 weeks.
