John’s Journey

John’s journey with football began in 1945 as an enthusiastic player with the Sutherland Casuals. In 1973, he joined the Lilli Pilli “Junior Soccer” Club committee and dedicated himself tirelessly to the roles of Club Secretary from 1979 and later Club President, a position he held for 16 years.

John’s unwavering efforts within the Lilli Pilli were recognised with the club becoming one of the most successful grassroots community-based volunteer clubs in NSW. After his time at Lilli Pilli, John was elected to the Sutherland Shire Association Committee in 1998, serving as a Member of the Executive until his retirement in 2010. During this period, he served as Committee Member, Association Vice President for nine years, and Chair of the Disciplinary Committee and Panel for many years, dedicating 37 years to football administration.

John played a pivotal role in updating the Constitution and Rules during his SSFA tenure. A great supporter of the Sutherland representative sides, he was a tireless worker in the canteen, a Ground official, and a Delegate to Football NSW at forums, meetings, appeal hearings, and AGMs. Following his retirement, John actively directed major upgrades to the Harrie Dening Centre, SSFA’s head office in Kareela.

John’s exceptional service earned him numerous accolades, including Life Membership of Lilli Pilli FC in 1978, the Sutherland Shire Merit Award in 1981, Honorary Player Life Membership at Lilli Pilli FC in 1998, and Life Membership of the Sutherland Shire Football Association in 2007. In 1999, he received a State Award from Football NSW, and in 2000, he was presented the Cook Community Award for services to the local community. In 2013, John was awarded the George Churchward Medal, the highest distinction in NSW Football.

Our deepest condolences go out to John’s family and loved ones.
