WPL 12 Girls Sharks vs Gladesville Ravens Sunday 13th May

This week Sutherland travelled to Gladesville on a windy Mothers Day. When arriving at the ground Courtney failed a fitness test on her injured hand so Mel courageously put her hand up to go in goals, and she didn’t disappoint.

In the tricky conditions the girls kept the ball on the ground and played wide using Sian and Kristen’s pace, with our midfield of Lauren, Georgia and Erin providing good support. Sutherland were creating some good movement forward dominating without reward with Lauren and Erin coming close. Meadsy holding the middle and our structure in defence improving every week it was making the opposition work hard for any chances they were to get. One of the chances came near the end of the half but Mel was up to the challange. The score stayed at 0-0 at halftime.

With Jess and DA starting the second half, their experience seemed to give the girls a lift and Sutherland’s ball movement was a bit quicker and earlier to our forwards and we now were making those chances count, first of which when Jess G was able to take on the defence down the left and put over a wonderful cross for DA who hit a first time shot which the Gladesville Keeper pulled off a great save to deny Sutherland taking the lead, and DA had another but hit it over the bar. The spectators could sense a goal and it came courtesy of a corner which DA took and with a bit of a goal mouth scramble Jess G was on hand to turn and hit low left foot shot into the corner of the net. 1-0. Sutherland were now on top and with some great play from Erin and a neat one two between Georgia and DA, DA split the defence and approached the keeper only to send her shot wide of the post. Unfortunately against the run of play Gladesville hit back when a searching ball forward caught our defence out and the Gladseville player hit a good shot passed a diving Mel to bring the score to 1-1 and it was now game on with five minutes to go. Again to the girls credit they kept pushing forward and finally DA was rewarded a goal, she intercepted a goalkick controlled it looked up and hit a wonderful shot over the keepers head to make the final score 2-1.

A special mention to Mel for her wonderful effort in goals this week a very hard job, just ask Courtney. Also to our defence Emily, Ashlee, Zoe, Lily and Bella, you are improving as a unit every week. As a team we can all score goals but we need to stop them as a team as well. Congrats on the win and it always makes training more enjoyable when you do.
