WPL Rnd 8 – Sutherland v Central Coast

13WPL V Central Coast Academy

Sutherland 3 Central Coast 0

Although the opening round was a 5-1 victory the coaching staff knew this would be a much harder encounter with Central Coast sitting third on the table after some good recent form. However the girls were on their game from the opening whistle despite having to rise early for the trip north up the freeway. Early strong defence from Rory and a neat pass to Angie, followed by another good pass to Jess saw the opening shot of the match in the early minutes. It wasn’t too long after that a terrific cross from Angie saw Jess unmarked who gave Gracie a great chance in front but unfortunately her shot sailed just over the crossbar.

It wasn’t all one sided however and the Central Coast girls were making it difficult for Sutho’s defence and a great tackle from Sophie prevented their first real chance. This was quickly followed by a counter attack that saw a great cross from Angie find Gracie in front of goals and she made no mistake with the header to put Sutherland up 1-0. It was almost 2-0 not long after when Karlee forced a corner with a good shot that the keeper fumbled over the by line.

Although the Coast were threatening at times the twins, Zoe and Lily, along with Sophie and Melody ensured any chances were diffused and some pinpoint passing from Lily and Zoe saw Bianca take a solid shot on goal.

Central Coast almost got the equaliser when some confusion at the back saw a great shot fortunately hit the crossbar and within minutes Angie made it 2-0 going into halftime with a superb strike on goals that gave the keeper no chance.

WPL13 25May14The second half began with a continuation of free flowing football by the girls and Lily and Angie were making it extremely difficult for the Central coast backs on the right side. Bianca had the first chance of the second half when she ran onto a well-timed pass from Savannah only to be denied by the opposition defence. It wasn’t too long after that she ran onto another great ball only to be judged offside by the referee. Bianca clearly felt she was onside and it was definitely marginal.

Zoe had a great shot on goal but again the keeper was solid. The midfield were very strong with Rory, Jess, Karlee and Ash all delivering quality ball to the forwards. A great ball from Karlee almost saw Savannah score after what looked to be a quality dummy by Bianca. Ash was again unlucky not to score with a well-timed shot from the edge of the box but it was Julia who got the third goal after another quality cross from Angie saw a neat tap in to ensure victory with a 3-0 score line. Sutherland were using the large pitch to their advantage with Liv and Julia on the left and  Melody and Sav on the right all finding plenty of space out wide and putting together some very clever combinations.

Once again defence was impeccable and Maddie could be heard in goals directing the backs and completed the match coming off her line at the right time to snuff out any possible danger. The fact that the girls have only conceded 2 goals is testament to the quality of Maddie and her backs and defensive midfielders.

Another solid effort from the girls. This week we return to Bates Drive for only our third game of the season when we host Inter Lions. It would be great to see a big crowd at Bates Drive to cheer all Sutherland teams beginning with the 13’s at 8.30am.

WPL15’s Victorious.

The U/15’s went out ready for a big game against Central Coast.  Round 1 results showed the two teams were very even with a one all draw.  The girls played some great football and showed how much they have improved over the last six weeks.  A 6-1 win with a hat trick to Roisin, 2 goals to DA and one to Bridget.  The girls were hoping to make assistant coach Troy’s day even extra special.  He was not there as he was getting married in the Hunter Valley and they gave him an early wedding present with a great win.  Special mention to Jess Meads 13’s who once again was there for us and played a great role in our win.  Great game girls.
