WPL. SSFA v Nepean (Sunday 17 April)

SSFA General Manager April 18, 2016 Football News, Women's Premier League Comments Off on WPL. SSFA v Nepean (Sunday 17 April)

WPL First Grade. Sutherland Shire FA  (1) vs Nepean (0)

It was a game that kept us all on the edge of our seats. Our girls came out firing and were ready to take anything that Nepean were going to throw at us.  It only took 6 minutes before we posted our goal.

Bianca took a goal kick, which found Verity who headed it onto Rochelle.  She drew out the keeper, got around her and scored.   Sutherland up 1 – 0 and looking good.

From then on it was an arm wrestle.   Nepean had a good chance but a great save from Bianca saw us keep the lead.  The girls stuck to the game plan and made Nepean shoot from a fair way out on most occasions.  It was a tight game with possession pretty even but our defensive stood strong and kept a clean sheet.

Morgan went close to scoring our second when she too drew out the keeper, got around her and lucky for Nepean the fullback arrived just in time to stick out her leg and deflect the ball out of goals.

The girls are looking forward to their first home game next week against Bankstown.  Get down to Harrie Denning at 3pm to watch the local derby.

WPL Reserve Grade. SSFA (1) v Nepean (2)

Goal Scorer for SSFA : Maddison Farmer

The team travelled west for a game that seemed to go forever.

The opening quarter tested our defence and the ball seemed to not go past the half way line.
Our team was unable to put together the usual passes due to the relentless midfield press from Nepean. Things started to change late in the first half and the SSFA girls worked hard to create attacking chances.  At the 32nd minute, Maddison got in behind the Nepean defence and after dribbling the ball close to goals, she calmly placed the ball past the keeper and hit the net. 1-0! Half time seemed like it would never arrive but the girls did a good job of defending the score until the break.

Mark did warn the players that Nepean will be coming out strong; and we need to keep the ball moving at speed and look to switch the play as often as possible to wear them down. The girls left the change room in good spirits.

We started the second half in a much better manner to the first and made several attempts at attacking. However, a counter attack by Nepean caught our girls off guard and resulted in an equaliser. Sutherland girls tried to take possession of the ball but some passes made it harder for our team. The minutes were dragging along when a deflection from our defence was intercepted by an opposing player who scored to make it 2-1. Our girls realised that they could come back and spent the last 10 minutes showing great spirit and determination to keep Nepean pinned in their half and created some great chances to level the score but today was not our day. Next round girls…it’s a deal.

On a much brighter note our team captain was announced. Maddison Farmer was chosen by our Coach Mark to lead the team in 2016. Congratulations Maddie.

A special thank you to Emma Gidney who was our keeper after having played the previous game and made some quality saves to keep us in the game. And thank you also to the U17 players who also helped with our game.

Thank you to our sponsors Gymea Tradies and Jubilee Physio. ( Emily gets our players game ready)

WPL 17. SSFA – 3  vs  Nepean – 0

SSFA Goal Scorers:  Nicola 2 & Melody 1

This is the 4th time these 2 sides have met this year after a trial & 2 matches at Proctor so we knew what to expect.

Nepean are a fast & physical side who like to play the ball long & then press high hoping for a turnover to capitalize on.

We almost obliged early on with a few hairy moments trying to play out but once we settled into the game we looked very (almost too) comfortable.

WPL17 17AprThe early storm lasted about 5 minutes & then our attack kicked in with a good goal scored by Nicola after some fantastic lead-up work.

As the game wore on our fast ball movement shifted the opposition around the park which tired them out & was leading to more chances being created.

Bridget had a good chance come her way when Mel squared a ball up in front of goal but the Keeper made a great save.

Mel got our 2nd finishing off what was another good piece of play by the team.

The 2nd half was more of the same with our defence rock solid & our passing mixed with some good combination play causing Nepean constant trouble.

Nicola got our 3rd goal with the side once again getting in behind the opposition out wide.

This was a very good team display with particular mention going to Di who had her best game of the season & Bella who continued on from where she left off last week.

Mel tried to finish the game off with a spectacular volley off a fantastic cross from out wide but unfortunately it didn’t find the back of the net.

Finally our first home game for the season next week against competition newcomers Bankstown City.

This side gave us a real run for our money at Proctor so should be great game to watch.

WPL15’s.  Sutherland Shire FA  (1) VS Nepean (0)

Goal scorer: Bianca Radman

The girls headed to St Mary’s this morning to play Nepean in the hope of playing the same way, with the same winning result, as the last time they had met in the pre-season trial match.

The girls started off attacking well with good offensive play and passing. During the first 20 minutes of play the amount of corners taken was almost double digits (Jayden injured on the bench might be able to tell me if I’m correct with her job as statistician). Bailey showed off her fitness by continually running to the opposite side of the field to beautifully whip them in but unfortunately we couldn’t  get the ball in the back of the net.  The majority of the play during the first half was in the opposition end with Ash dominant in the middle section, distributing the ball and controlling the direction of play.  Lana, Jazz and Charlotte worked tirelessly in the middle of the field to create more chances.   Enya had to do her best to stay awake though as the defensive prowess of Lauren, Tahlee, Zoe, Bailey and Bec made it difficult for Nepean players to cut through and have any attempt at goal.  Although there were plenty more corners and shots at goal from Sutho the girls went to the break 0-0

After the pep talk from coach Steve the girls seemed to come back fired up.  Bob showed how versatile a player she is by playing on the left flank, beautifully passing through to Bianca in what we thought would be the first goal of the game – again this was blocked.  More opportunities by Sutho with Bailey pushing high on the right side tapping the ball across to Leanna who had a great run towards goal, with the ball just slightly overrun.  Another missed chance by Tahlee who had come back on as left wing had a beautiful far out shot at goal only for it to hit the post.  More corners and free kicks were taken and Amelia, who has been trying so hard all game, was now trying out her “dummy” moves.

Finally twelve minutes in another great run on the wing by Bob through to Shay who took a shot at goal only for it to be thwarted by a Nepean defender trying to clear it out, luckily for us Bianca was there to finish off. Well done Bee.  We can’t have Shay scoring goals when her mum is at home recovering.  Get well soon Mauz.

The score line wasn’t the best as the girls had plenty of chances that they didn’t capitalise on, but as the saying goes, a win is a win!

Well done girls.

WPL13’s. Sutherland Shire FA (2) V’s Nepean FC (1)

Goal Scorers : Mia 1 & Meagan 1

After our very early start last week, we were full of energy after getting a sleep in until 6am! When we played this team in a trial match, it was a 1/1 draw so we were keen to beat them this time.

We started brilliantly, with Meagan getting an opportunity straight after the kick off, however Nepean’s goalie was waiting for it – unlucky.

Unfortunately 5 mins later, Nepean made a break and managed to chip one over Aimee’s head to make it 1 nil. Even though they were up one nil, that only made us more determined to get a goal of our own. It felt like there were more red players on the field than blue because no matter what we did with the ball, there always seemed to be a Nepean player in our way. Our defence, Alex, Georgia E, Lani, Lucy and EJ managed to stop them breaking through and they kicked some great balls through to Meagan, Kiani and Holly. Holly crossed a great ball to Daniella who then passed it to Mia and she took a shot but, again, Nepean’s goalkeeper kept getting in the way. Both Aimee and Akala did a great job in goals, keeping the score at 0-1 at half time.

At the start of the second half Nepean got a penalty but Aimee was ready for it and stopped them from extending their lead. Kyra and Keira showed their skill in the middle and put some great balls through to Paris and Mia, with Mia sending a ball over their goalie’s head to make it 1 all! It only seemed like minutes later when Holly crossed the ball over to Meagan who put it in the back of the net and we had a 2-1 lead. Talk about a great finish girls – we didn’t give up chasing the ball and we made sure Nepean had no further opportunities. This game proved that we should never give up.
