This week Sutherland travelled to Blacktown with a win and some confidence needed after a couple of losses to some quality teams.
Sutherland dominated the early exchanges with our midfield of Georgia, Mel and Meadsy controlling the game and feeding our forwards with some early ball which enabled Kristen and Sian to get some good crosses over. The girls were playing with confidence and the chances were coming one falling to Georgia, after a neat one two with DA she hit a shot straight at the keeper, another reversed this time with Georgia passing to DA who shot wide of the goal and also Emily came close after a goal mouth scramble she too found the keeper. Sutherland’s defence was untroubled in the early stages with Ashlee, Zoe and Lily stopping anything Blacktown put forward and it looked comfortable untill the last 10mins. Sutherland started to stop marking and allowed Blacktown too much time on the ball and we were giving the ball away to easily. Blacktown were now getting to the ball first and inturn had two chances and scored from both to make it 2-0 in a matter of time and the game had changed dramtically before half time.
The second period didn’t start much better with Blacktown scoring a good goal getting in behind Sutherland’s defence but from then on we got some momentum with Lauren holding up the ball well allowing Jess G and Kristen getting more ball and space down the wings. The chances were coming our way now with numerous crosses going across the face of goal with only a touch needed to score. It wasn’t long before Sutherland got one back with a free kick that was taken by Jess G sent over from the right and a Blacktown defender putting it in her own net to make it 3-1 with ten to go. With in a couple of minutes Sutherland had a second with great lead up work from Lauren and Erin, Kristen received a great ball in behind the Blacktown defence ran towards goal and hit a wonderful strike past the keeper to make 3-2 and it was now game on. The final 8 mins flowed from end to end with Bella and Jess G dominating down the left with the later hitting the cross bar and more chances going close. Unfotunately Blacktown held us out and the final score ended up 3-2.
It was a game that got away, which could hurt us at the end of the year, we need to be more aggressive in our desire to win the ball when we don’t have it showing the opposition teams that we want it. Hopefully we can get some decent training in this week and get back to our winning ways.
