SSFA Welcomes Mick McGovern as Head Coach for Women’s First Grade in 2024 Season

Sutherland Shire Football Association (SSFA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mick McGovern as the FNSW League 1 Women’s First Grade Coach for the upcoming 2024 season. Mick brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and dedication to this pivotal role.

Mick rejoins the SSFA Representative Programs after his successful tenure as the Senior Technical Director and Men’s SPL Head Coach at Bonnet Bay FC, in its inaugural year and 2023 season. Holding an FFA/AFC A License, Mick is an experienced leader with an extensive background in the Women’s Premier League.

His coaching journey is marked by significant milestones, including his previous role as SSFA WNPL Head Coach/First Grade from 2014 to 2018, during which he earned the respected titles of WNPL2 Coach of the Year in both 2016 and 2015. Mick’s dedication to youth development is evident through his roles as SSFA WNPL 12’s Coach from 2011 to 2013, SSFA Chairman Coach Development Committee in 2012-2013, and SSFA Academy Coordinator in 2013. Furthermore, he has excelled in coaching high-level women’s teams, serving as the Christian Schools Sports Association Coach in 2020, New Anglican Schools Sports Association (NASSA) Open Girls Head Coach from 2010 to 2011, and All Co-Educational Independent Schools (ACEIS) Open Girls Head Coach during the same period.

When asked about his new role, Mick enthusiastically expressed, “I am excited to be back at SSFA Reps as the Head Coach of the Women’s First Grade team. With the abundance of talented players in the Sutherland Shire and its surrounding regions, combined with the recent success of the Women’s World Cup, I am truly pleased to be a part of these young athletes’ journeys. I am determined to create a supportive and nurturing environment for these young athletes with the vision of promotion to the WNPL1 and provide a lasting impact on women’s football within the Shire.”

Mick’s influence extends beyond the SSFA Reps to educational institutions, with roles such as Head Coach at Inaburra School from 2012-2021. His earlier service as Head Coach/Football Coordinator at Thomas Hassall Anglican College from 2006 to 2011 also attests to his commitment to nurturing young talent.

Mick’s impressive coaching qualifications and a stellar track record in developing talent and leading teams make him an invaluable asset to our club. We firmly believe that his leadership will not only inspire our Women’s First Grade team but will also elevate all teams within the Girls Youth League to achieve even greater success in the upcoming seasons.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Mick as he embarks on this exciting journey with the SSFA. We are eagerly anticipating the growth and achievements he will bring to our Women’s First Grade team
